Dual Credit Policy and Information

Get started on your college journey at a reduced price while you are still in high school! The Berkeley County Dual Credit program provides the opportunity for high school students to take college courses and earn high school credit from that course.

Berkeley County Dual Credit Policy

  • All tuition, fees and textbook costs are the responsibility of the parent/guardian and student.

  • Only seniors are allowed to leave the high school campus during the academic school day.

  • Some college courses may be included on a senior's high school schedule. These may be limited as all students must be enrolled in seven class periods.

  • Any student before 11th grade may take college courses. However, these will not be dual credit courses and will not be placed on a high school transcript.

  • Dual credit courses must be pre-arranged with the school in order to count for high school credit.

  • Three semester hours of college credit may be counted as 1/2 high school credit. (Example: if students take English 101, this fulfills Semester 1 of English 12)

  • Students who meet requirements for enrollment in the course administered by the institution of higher education can enroll in dual credit courses. (GPA and entrance exam results vary by each institution)

  • A college course must be a BCS BOE approved dual credit course for the student to be issued a grade on his/her high school transcript.

  • The grade issued by the institution of higher education for the college course will be the grade issued on the high school and college transcripts.

  • Failure to earn credit in a dual credit course necessary to earn equivalent high school credit for graduation will result in the student not meeting the high school credit requirements for graduation.

  • Interested juniors and seniors must speak to their school counselor regarding dual credit offerings and enrollment procedures.

  • Some college credits earned may fulfill prescribed or elective credits to meet high school graduation requirements.

  • Shepherd University Transportation: all students must provide their own transportation to Shepherd Main Campus

  • Blue Ridge JumpStart Transportation: students enrolled in the Blue Ridge JumpStart program must utilize transportation provided by Spring Mills High School.

  • Blue Ridge Scholars Transportation: students enrolled in Blue Ridge Scholars program must provide their own transportation.

*** Please note: There is NO federal financial aid available for high school students. Some institutions will offer internal scholarships. Contact individual institutions to inquire.
