What Does a School Counselor Do?

School counselors have a variety of roles within our school.

1.Aiding in the emotional needs of students:

Sometimes students have difficulty regulating or understanding the emotions they feel. In fact, sometimes students may have challenges even identifying their own emotions. A school counselor works with students who are facing these difficulties, challenges, and helps to give them a new understanding of their emotional state or develop new methods/skills to help them cope or regulate those emotions.

2. Aiding in the social needs of students:

Students interact with others daily at school. This sometimes causes problems, like friendship issues, to arise. There are also times when students may have trouble working with their fellow classmates in general. The school counselor helps students who are having trouble with their social skills and aids in developing them. These social skills can range from sharing to learning how to communicate with others, depending upon the needs of the student.

3. Helping families get the resources they need:

School counselors have a variety of resources to aid families who are struggling with housing, food, utilities, etc. When a family in need contacts the school counselor, the counselor will guide them to the needed resources. Families who may feel they need outside help for their student who is struggling with social or emotional needs can also use the school counselor. The school counselor is knowledgeable in different resources provided by the county or outside of the school system where parents/guardians can receive help for their child.

4. Teaching students in guidance lessons:

Elementary school is the foundation for all students academically, socially, and emotionally. The school counselor provides guidance lessons in the classroom revolving around critical skills that students will need for their future such as: problem solving, goal setting, communication, resiliency, etc. Students will learn about and understand how to apply these skills to everyday life.
