Winchester Avenue School
In the South end of Martinsburg, West Virginia, children attended Mason School on Maryland Avenue, which later became a private residence. As it became crowded, the children marched with banners through the streets of Martinsburg asking for a new school.
In 1920, Winchester Avenue School was built at the present location on 650 Winchester Avenue. The three-story high red-brick building consisted of grades one through eight until Junior High Schools were built.
Through the efforts of the PTA members, the cafeteria was added in the school's basement, during the years of 1964, 1965, and 1966.
In February 1976 the school bell was repaired and rang every morning at the start of school.
Currently, the basement of the school holds the cafeteria, gymnasium, library, and computer lab.
The first floor is for pre-k, kindergarten, and first-grade classes, while the second is designated for second and third-grade classrooms.
The school houses approximately 150 students.
