How Do I Meet With My Counselor?

Students are assigned to a counselor alphabetically by last name.  To find out who your counselor is, please visit the Meet Your Counselors page. Referrals may be made by the student, parent/guardian, or teacher.  Students may make an appointment to meet with their counselor by completing a conference request form available in the counseling office, by email, or by Schoology message.  Parents/guardians may contact a counselor by email or by phone, at (304) 229-1962, to schedule an appointment.

Academic Planning

School counselors provide academic planning with students and parents/guardians both individually and in group settings.  Academic planning occurs annually when students complete scheduling for the next year's courses and during their one-on-one Personalized Education Plan (PEP) meeting.

Scheduling typically occurs between the months of November and January each school year.  Students are presented information about the Program of Studies and given a Scheduling Form to complete with parents/guardians.  Scheduling Forms returned and reviewed with the school counselor.  For more information about scheduling, check out our Scheduling page.

Talk-To-Me Program

The Talk-To-Me Program is a free program available to students in 9th through 12th grade.  This program provides volunteers from the community who offer a "listening ear" to students.  Volunteers are available regularly throughout the school year and can be requested by the student or parent/guardian.

For more information, take a look at the Talk-to-me Program Brochure.

Project Aware

Project Aware is a grant-funded program that provides free mental health counseling on-site in the school setting.  Counseling services are provided by professional counselors from East Ridge Health Systems.

For more information or to request Project Aware counseling services, contact your school counselor by email or phone at (304)229-1962. More information available online at Student Well-Being & Health Resources.

Confidentiality

A student’s right to privacy and confidentiality is the basis for an effective counseling relationship. A school counselor's primary obligation for confidentiality is to the student, but this obligation is balanced with an understanding of parents'/guardians' legal and inherent right to guide and make decisions on their student's behalf. Confidentiality ensures that school counselors won’t share students’ disclosures with others except when the student or parent/guardian authorizes it or when there is an evident danger to the student and/or to other persons.

Other Counseling Services

School counselors provide a variety of other services to meet students' personal/social, academic, and career needs. Counselors provide individual and group counseling. Counseling is short term in nature and is not therapy. When necessary, referrals are made to appropriate community resources. For a list of community resources, search the Student Well-Being & Health Resources.
