John T. Morgan Memorial Scholarship
This award is presented to a graduating senior whose career choice is to pursue a degree in education from a West Virginia college or university.
John Morgan graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1948. After spending time in the military and graduating from Shepherd College, he began his teaching career at Martinsburg High School. He then followed up as assistant principal and eventually the principal of MHS.
He retired from Berkeley County Schools in 1989, and this scholarship has been established by his wife and daughters, in his memory, for his life-long dedication to education.
Hattie Webb Snyder graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1910. She served as secretary of the Association and was later elected as permanent secretary. She held this position until her death in November 1969.
She became a walking history of the association by virtue of having been at the preliminary meeting of the formation of the Association in 1910. She pioneered for women in the insurance business before retiring in 1968. In January 1970 the Alumni Association created the memorial scholarship in her memory to reflect her loyalty and longevity with the Association.
William Nelson Dunn, Jr. Memorial Scholarship – This award is presented to a graduating senior who shows an interest to pursue a career in science.
Will Nelson Dunn, Jr. graduated in 1925 from Martinsburg High School and received his AB and MA degrees from West Virginia University. He was employed by E. R. Squibb Co. until retiring in 1971 as head of its overseas research and testing department. After retiring, he returned to Martinsburg to become active in numerous civic and community affairs including the MHS Alumni Association. He was a valuable member and served on the board of directors until his death.
Fred B. Jackson, Jr. Scholarship – This award is presented to a graduating senior based on financial need and with an average GPA of 2.0 and above for all four years at MHS. It is good for any degree study offered by an accredited college or university. This scholarship was first presented at the annual banquet of the association on May 26th, 1984.
Martinsburg High School Alumni Association Scholarship - This award is presented to a graduating senior based on financial need and with an average GPA of 2.0 and above for all four years at MHS. It is good for any degree study offered by an accredited college or university. This scholarship was first presented at the annual banquet of the association on May 31st, 1980.
Elizabeth Brindle Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship was established in 1988 by the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association to honor this individual who was a ‘guiding light’ and a ‘driving force’ in the association. Elizabeth Brindle faithfully served on the board for over 50 years; 36 of those as the treasurer.
James Reynolds Memorial Scholarship – This scholarship was established in 1988 by Kathryn Severs Reynolds as a trust scholarship in memory of her husband who was a graduate of MHS in 1938. Mr. Reynolds was a career printer. He started with the Martinsburg Journal and moved on to careers with National Geographic, The Washington Post, and the U.S. Government Printing Office.
It was the Reynolds family’s desire to designate this scholarship for an individual who plans to attend a vocational/trade school upon graduation. Personnel from James Rumsey make the selection for the recipient.
All recipients of a MHS scholarship will receive a monetary sum divided between 1st and 2nd semester as long as the winner can show proof of enrollment in an institution of higher learning. The recipient’s name will be added to a plaque which is located in Alumni Hall at the entrance of the high school.
