Spring Mills Primary

Located east of Route 11, in northern Berkeley County. From Exit 13, take I-81 north to Exit 20 (Spring Mills Road, Route 901). Turn right at top of exit ramp onto Route 901 East. At stop light, continue straight across Route 11 (Williamsport Pike). Go 0.3 mile. School is on left.

Spring Mills Primary opened its doors in 2011.  There are approximately 425 students currently enrolled in kindergarten through second-grade. The $12.7 million building can accommodate 600 students. 

This "green school," which has an environmentally-friendly mission, is the first new building in West Virginia to receive LEED Gold Certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Some of its green features are a geothermal heating and cooling system, enhanced insulation, and natural day-lighting which enables the building to use 33% less energy.  Thirty percent less water is used due to reduced-flow kitchen equipment, waterless urinals, and motion activated sink faucets.  The primary school has a kitchen waste pulping system and decomposing unit that reduces the amount of food waste taken to landfills by 78%.  The school building and community is used to teach an environmentally focused curriculum.  The curriculum topics include energy, recycling, composting, water, gardening, healthy atmospheres, wildlife & nature, and outdoor adventures.
