Three fifth-grade students from Mill Creek Intermediate School excelled in an American history essay contest hosted by the Pack Horse Ford Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).
The contest invited students to imagine their lives as colonists in the 1770s and write about why they would have participated in a tea party protest against British taxes and laws.
Mill Creek students Emily Hendrix, Gwyneth Switzer, and Marissa Ickes earned first, second, and third places, respectively, in their grade level.
First-place winners received $50, a certificate, and entry into the state competition. Second and third-place winners were awarded $25 and $20, respectively, along with certificates.
The first-place essays have been sent to the state chairwoman for judging, with the possibility of advancing to district, regional, and national levels.
A ceremony and reception to honor the winners is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, at the Shepherdstown train station. Congratulations to these students for their outstanding achievements!
