INWOOD — Friday evening, Musselman High School celebrated its first football game on the new turf field by having a turf dedication ceremony. The school invited representatives of five different football coaches to celebrate this new accomplishment for the school community and the team.

With the help of the November 2022 Bond Call, Berkeley County Schools is dedicated to building and updated several things throughout the county. One of these projects included adding new turf to the Waldeck Field at Denny Price Stadium. They completed the project just in time for the football season to start so the community can and athletes can enjoy the beautiful field.

As a part of the turf dedication ceremony, representatives of five different Musselman High School football coaches came to celebrate the event, including the Waldeck family. Brad Waldeck’s father Kenneth Waldeck is known for heading up Musselman Hugh School athletics by coaching some of the first sports teams at the school. Brad was joined by his wife Judy and several generations who all came to honor his father’s memory.

“This is a great honor for my father and for us,” Brad Waldeck said. “The younger kids get to see how their grandfather and great-grandfather is well-thought of by the Musselman community. They get to feel that and it means a lot to them and to the whole family.”

Each of the families and coaches who attended the ceremony received a jar filled with dirt from the old field as a special way to remember what the field and Musselman High School means to them.

The turf project was completed by Hellas Construction. They installed the turf and will also be upgrading the track sometime in the future. Reggie Quawe from Hellas Construction talked about why it’s this new turf is so important.

“It signifies the value the students have for their school district,” Quawe said. “These students deserve the best and that’s what the school district is trying to provide for them. It also represents growth for the community as a whole because this is a place where everyone comes together.”

The Musselman High School community and athletes are excited for the new field and look forward to a great year of sports.
