Teachers Recognized for National Board Certification

Nine Berkeley County Schools teachers joined an elite group of educators who have received National Board Certification in November 2012. On February 5, 2013 at the Berkeley County School Board meeting the 2012 National Board Certified Teachers were honored. The teachers, their principals, mentors and families were all present for this recognition ceremony. Certificates and pins were presented to the teachers.

The Board recognized nine Berkeley County teachers for achieving National Board Teacher Certification and two Berkeley County teachers for achieving National Board Teacher Recertification. They are Mark Albright, Hedgesville Middle; Kevin Frankhouser, Hedgesville High; Magdalene Frye, Orchard View Intermediate; Sherrie Hartman, Bunker Hill Elementary; Kelly Kable, Spring Mills Middle; Erin Peralta, Musselman Middle; Anthony Ponton, Hedgesville Middle; Gina Pratt, Back Creek Valley Elementary; Jessica Ruqus, Hedgesville Middle; Cindy Evarts; Orchard View Intermediate and Sandy Marchese, Gerrardstown Elementary.

National Board Certification is a symbol of professional teaching excellence attesting that a teacher was judged by his or her peers as one who is accomplished, makes sound professional judgments about students best interests and acts effectively on those judgments. Berkeley County Schools is fortunate to now have 44 Nationally Certified Teachers among its workforce.

These teachers were measured against high and rigorous standards through an extensive series of performance-based assessments, which includes teaching portfolios, student work samples, videotapes or DVD's and thorough analysis of the candidates teaching and the students learning.

The National Certification adds credibility as a professional teacher. As a peer review credential it is unique in that it recognizes that which you have already accomplished in your career and further validates that by way of issuing national certification.

Certification is voluntary and open to anyone with a baccalaureate degree and three years of classroom experience. It is intended to enhance your professional credentials, not replace them. It shall become the benchmark that all teachers are measured on at the national level.

We applaud and congratulate Berkeley County Schools National Certified Teachers.

Berkeley County Schools and the West Virginia Department of Education pay nationally board certified teachers $75,000 over a ten-year period once the certification is earned.
